Maud Karlsson - artist, performer, designer

Maud Karlsson is a graduate from the Ballet Academy in Stockholm, Sweden and left after graduation for New York where she worked extensively as a dancer for 11 years, including 5 years with the legendary Donald Byrd. Maud also began teaching and choreographing in New York and she has done numerous performances, shows and television appearances.

After returning to Sweden, Maud began writing poetry that finally led to the full lenght solo piece Hesitate, choose, throw myself in. The performance was shown at The House of Dance/Black Box/Stockholm and The European Women's Theater Festival in Torneo, to name a couple, and led to a number of commissioned works for art museums and conferences around Sweden. The focus was on the custom made and site specific productions and the company MaudsArt was initiated.

During above mentioned period, Maud’s ways of expression was developing and the productions came to entail dance, text, and voice compositions. Since 1999 her productions has been shown in many places - art museums, theatres, royal gardens, television and at conferences and festivals.

In 2009 Maud did her first short film - Another way of saying it. A commissioned work for LMS (Teachers of Modern Languages). It awoke an interest for film in her, and she has, since then, continued with several short films. In her stage production, Les trois femmes, that premiered 2012 at Uppsala Stadsteater and toured through Dancenet Sweden, three short films could be seen as part of the performance. Since then she has continued to create video works presented at different exhibitions.

 

The art film Her Self  - a portrait (produced 2016) has toured New York, Cannes, Berlin, Reykjavik, Stockholm and Uppsala.

2016 Maud delved into visual art - painting and sculpting -which led to the solo performance Me myself and I 2017 and the solo exhibition Kropp-Tid-Tillstånd at Multeum in Strängnäs 2018.
2018 she began her research work Her Story - The Exhibition that had its world premiere in the fall of 2021 and is now booked at other places.

2019 the sequel to the artfilm Her Self, was produced; Her Selfie - a social closet. It premiered at Uppsala art museum december 2021-january 2022.
2021 Maud also began the continuation of the larger concept HER STORY where a collection of coats has been designed.

As a curator, Maud has run the concept Dansfiket/The Dance Café in Uppsala since 2009 in an attempt to further grow an audience for contemporary dance. After 31 Cafés with national and international guests, Maud has transformed the concept into a talk show - A la Maud.
